Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

My teaching pedagogy is heavily indebted to the work of the Reacting to the Past Consortium, of which I am an active member.

In addition to adopting their textbooks and methods into my courses, I am writing two full-length “flagship” games that will be ultimately published through UNC Press.

judaism and Hellenism in Conflict? Jerusalem, 175-160.

The first covers the events of Jerusalem during the Maccabean Revolt and its aftermath. Students inhabit real and created charaters within the gerousia of Jerusalem to determine the relationship between Judaism and Hellenism, divine providence, the afterlife, and the intersection of native and imperial politics. Jerusalem 175-160 BCE: Judaism and Hellenism in Conflict? will be available in Hebrew translation through Tel Aviv University and the Koret Center for Jewish Civilization by Hanukkah 2026. Early editions of the English version are available upon request.

Apostle and Epistle: Letters and Authority in the Pauline Ekklesia

The second game explores Pauline communities in the wake of the apostle’s death. Students inhabit everyday members of Paul’s ekkelsiaia, adopting roles as Jews and Greeks, Slaves and Free, Men, and Women, tradesfolk and merchants. As they read Paul’s letters, they consider key questions for understanding the early Church:

  1. Who is Jesus, and why does he matter?

  2. What does it mean to be “in Christ”?

Early editions of Apostle and Epistle: Letters and Authority in the Pauline Ekklesia are available upon request.
